Moving checklist for a room or shared house

By the Signpost team6 min read

Moving is easier when you have a plan. This checklist keeps the important jobs in order, so nothing gets missed in the rush. Work through it at your own pace.

Before you move

  • Confirm the move in date and the rent with the provider in writing.
  • Check what is included, for example furniture and bills.
  • Sort your deposit and any rent in advance.
  • Update your benefits and rent details for the new address.
  • Arrange to redirect or update your post.

Sort your money and ID

Make sure your Universal Credit or Housing Benefit reflects the new address, since getting this right early avoids a gap in your rent. If you are missing documents, our guides on getting ID and the documents you may need will help.

Moving day

  • Take photos of the room when you arrive, in case of a dispute later.
  • Check the smoke alarm, heating and locks work.
  • Get any keys and fobs you need.
  • Note the meter readings if you pay for energy.
  • Save the provider and any emergency contact in your phone.

Your first week

Settle in slowly. Learn where things are, meet the people you live with, and sort a simple routine. If it is supported accommodation, meet your support worker and agree a first catch up. Our guide on settling into a new supported home has more.

Stay safe

Never hand over money before you have seen the room and have a written agreement. Our guide on how to avoid housing scams covers the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

What should I sort before moving day?

Confirm the date and rent in writing, sort your deposit, update your benefits for the new address, and arrange your post. Getting your benefits updated early avoids a gap in your rent.

Why take photos when I move in?

Photos of the room on arrival give you a record of its condition, which helps if there is ever a dispute about damage or your deposit.

What if I am missing ID or documents?

There are ways to sort each one out. See our guides on getting ID when you have none and the documents you may need before moving into a room.
