A Discretionary Housing Payment, often shortened to DHP, is extra short term help from your local council when your housing benefit or the housing part of your Universal Credit does not cover all of your rent.
Who can apply
You can usually apply if you already get help with your rent through housing benefit or Universal Credit and you still have a shortfall. It is designed to help while you sort out a longer term solution.
What it can help with
A DHP can help with a rent shortfall, and in some cases with a deposit or the cost of moving to a more affordable home. It does not cover things like council tax or ineligible service charges.
How to apply
You apply to your local council, usually through a short form on their website. Explain your situation clearly and include evidence of your income, your rent and why you have a shortfall. Your support worker can help you make a strong application.
Good to know
A DHP is discretionary, which means it is not guaranteed and it is usually time limited. Use the breathing space it gives you to get advice and put a longer term plan in place.
