Moving into supported accommodation is a big step. A few good questions up front save a lot of stress later. Providers expect you to ask, and a good one will answer clearly. If someone dodges these questions, treat that as a warning sign.
About the money
- •What is the weekly rent, and what are the service charges on top?
- •How much will I pay from my own money each week?
- •Are bills included?
- •Do you need rent in advance or a deposit?
About the support
- •What does a typical week of support look like?
- •Who is my support worker and how do I contact them?
- •Are staff on site, and at what times?
- •How does support change as I get more independent?
About the home
- •Is the room self contained or shared, and what is shared?
- •Who else lives here?
- •What are the house rules, for example on visitors?
- •What happens if there is a repair?
About your agreement
Ask whether you will sign a licence or a tenancy, because your rights differ. Our guide on your rights as a licensee explains the difference. Ask how much notice you would get if you had to leave, and how notice works if you want to move on.
Before you say yes
Ask for everything in writing, and take your time. If you feel rushed or pressured, that is a reason to pause. You can also read our guide on how to spot a good provider.
